Many people automatically think of marijuana when they hear the word hemp. While hemp belongs to the same plant species as marijuana, it is from a variety that has no THC, the chemical in marijuana that gets a person high.

Hemp foods provide a balanced source of essential amino acids, the building blocks of protein. In addition to being a great source of protein, they contain essential fatty acids (EFAs)—omega-3, omega-6, and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA). These nutrients are regarded as “essential” because the body does not produce them; they must come from the food we eat. Hemp also contains vitamins, minerals, and fiber, it is easily digested, and it is not genetically modified like many soy products.

Hemp is available as seeds or in powdered form. Certified organic hulled hempseeds can be eaten as a snack or added to soups, salads, smoothies, cereals (such as oatmeal), main dishes, and desserts (add them after the food has been cooked to preserve the EFAs). Use certified organic powdered hemp protein in blender drinks. See this month’s recipe for a Hemp Protein and Berry Smoothie.
