Ginger has been used as a medicine in many cultures for centuries. It is a warming herb that aids digestion and relieves nausea. It has a warming effect on the upper respiratory tract and has been used to treat colds and influenza. Ginger may also help reduce inflammation and pain in arthritic conditions.

See this month’s recipe for Ginger Tea. Sip it in the morning instead of the lemon drink (see Eating Alive II, page 58 and the Health Tip for 5/1/2005) and before meals to stimulate digestion, or whenever you are feeling nauseous. Those with stomach ulcers and in the early weeks of pregnancy should limit themselves to only small amounts of ginger tea.
