Majority of People are Deficient in Vitamin D!!! WHY????

Northshore Naturopathic Clinic is located in North Vancouver, British Columbia and for those patients reading this article that live in this area you definitely know that it rains for almost 80% of the year here and that Vitamin D from the sun is in a limited supply. For those patients that live in a warmer climate down South, don’t stop reading, because Vitamin D deficiency is crossing the border!!

It has also been published for years now that Vitamin D deficiency is a common problem that we are struggling to correct. This is a friendly reminder to all of you that it is time to winterize your diet as you can feel the air starting to cool; and for our patients living in warmer climates, remember that-unless you are in the sun and not stuck in your office working-winterizing your diet is also essential.

If it has been some time since you have strolled your eyes through the Eating Alive Program booklet you will need to be refreshed on how winterizing you diet or Eating with the Seasons actives your Vitamin D.

Remember your kidneys are “IN THE DARK;” they can only tell the seasons by the foods that you eat. Foods that are growing in the hot sun are high in potassium and your kidneys are responsible for monitoring your sodium/potassium gradients, they are also responsible for activating and deactivating your Vitamin D.

If during the winter months you eat plants grown in the hot sun (such as tropical fruits or salads that are high in potassium) you are tricking your body into thinking you live in a location where sun is available and that your Vitamin D will be triggered to activate with the exposure of sun on your skin!!!!!!!  (In the winter this is obviously not the case.)Our bodies are so smart the problem now a days is that we can get any fresh fruit or vegetables from every location,in any grocery store and if we choose to eat them we will be tricking our bodies to deactivate our Vitamin D in the winter!!!!!!! This is not good!!!!! Vitamin D is essential and if we can get our bodies to naturally activate it to be a thousand times more potent just by eating with the seasons and putting sea salt on our vegetables, we will no longer suffer from what Dr. Matsen calls “Eating too Good.”

So this Vitamin D thinks it’s a big deal, and when you get to know it a little better you begin to realize that it really is! As a patient of Dr. Matsen you will be familiar with the ileocecal valve, which is strong when calcium is properly absorbed in our bodies. The ileocecal valves strength is essential because its functioning as a one-way valve determines if you will have your good health. Remember: if yours is weak because you are deficient in Vitamin D and therefore consequently deficient in calcium absorption, all the bad bacteria and yeast that are meant to be in an optimal balance in your large intestine can travel freely to your small intestine (which is where all your absorption of nutrients is suppose to take place.) Having bad bacteria and yeast in your small intestine is a tragedy to your health. They will cause inflammation, absorb your nutrients before you do and overload your liver with toxins.

In summary the real pillar to ones health is ensuring that Vitamin D is activated, which allows for optimal absorption of calcium and that strengthens your ileocecal valve. If that alone has not convinced you enough to winterize your diet and supplement with Vitamin D, read on to see the many more beneficial functions that Vitamin D has on your body:

Functions of Vitamin D:

  • Activates detoxification in the gut
  • Prevents intracellular hypercalcinosis (too much calcium inside the cells can trigger cancer growth)
  • Acts directly on DNA to ensure normal healthy cell growth
  • Improves cell communication
  • Promotes apoptosis (cell death for abnormally growing cells)
  • Increases immune system
  • Prevents syndrome X
  • Regulates weight
  • Helps curb fatigue and seasonal affective disorder
  • Prevents infertility and PMS

How to ensure you are getting enough Vitamin D

  • Eat with the Seasons
  • Supplement
    • 1000IU Vitamin D in the summer
    • 2000IU Vitamin D in the winter
    • Remember if you work inside all day treat as though you are in winter
    • Get out in the sun when it is summer, if you are starting to get a tan you know you have adequate Vitamin D levels because your skin’s changing coloris a protective mechanism to decrease Vitamin D absorption

Yours in Health,

The Eating Alive Team
