Have you ever thought about seeing a naturopathic doctor but didn’t go through with it because you just weren’t sure what the experience would entail and if they could actually help? If that’s the case and you’re not entirely convinced whether or not a naturopathic doctor is for you, the following reasons can help with your decision:<gwmw style="display:none;">

Naturopathic doctors have a different approach when it comes to health and treat their patients in a very unique way by looking past the symptoms to get to the root of the illness and figure out what is causing it. They take a different approach and ask a ton of questions to really understand the patient and all aspects of their life. They go beyond the basic inquiries to determine the cause of your pain.

Naturopathic doctors don’t rush their appointments and spend a lot of time with each patient. They want to learn everything they can about you and understand your medical history and health concerns. They also give you the opportunity to ask questions so that you feel comfortable. You’ll never feel rushed and the doctor will spend as much time as necessary with you.

You’ll have several different treatment options that go beyond the standard prescription medications. Naturopathic doctors educate their patients about other treatment options like acupuncture, homeopathy, herbal medicine, dietary advice and nutritional supplementation. They will help you make the right choices and select a treatment that is right for you so that you can achieve your health goals.

Naturopathic doctors are highly trained professionals whose education is comparable to that of a medical doctor. They are highly educated and have seven years of post-graduate studies, which includes a bachelor degree as well as a four year naturopathic medical degree and an internship.

When you feel like you’ve tried just about everything and you’re not seeing any results and it seems like nothing is working, it’s a good idea to take a chance and try something different. Visiting a naturopath is considered the road less travelled because not everyone considers this option and it just might be the right choice for you. Naturopathic doctors take you on a different path to help you with your health and overall well-being. They are educated and equipped to offer a variety of treatment options that are not offered anywhere else.

If you’re ready to tackle your health goals and want to treat your illness right from the root, it may be time to consult a naturopathic doctor. Northshore Naturopathic Clinic in Vancouver is a professional clinic that offers naturopath IV therapy, anxiety therapy through natural anxiety relief treatments and so much more.

More than half of your immune system lives in your stomach. It does this by keeping harmful bacteria out of your system and using healthy bacteria to keep your body running smoothly. That makes it a fairly important part of your overall health. You should consider these tips to keep your gut and the rest of your body in good shape.

Why is gut health important?

There is a limited amount of space available along your stomach lining for bacteria to reside. You want to make sure the bacteria that does settle there is the right kind.

Your stomach also impacts the way your brain functions and vice versa. That is one of the reasons why it is so important to keep your mental health in check. When you feel anxious or experience stress, your brain can hinder involuntary actions in your body like digestion. Similarly, when your gut does not feel good, it sends signals to your brain that can affect your emotions and mood. In fact, most of the serotonin – a neurotransmitter that regulates sleep and emotions – is made in your gut, not your brain. How you feel and what goes on in your stomach is much more intertwined than scientists had previously realized. That is why you should make taking care of your gut a top priority on your health checklist.

Eat probiotic foods

Fermented foods contain a large number of good bacteria. Kimchi, miso, sauerkraut, coconut kefir, and microalgae are all great plant-based foods rich in probiotics. When selecting these types of foods, avoid pasteurized and vinegar-based varieties since it can kill good bacteria.

Eat regularly, but do not graze

Give your gut the chance to clear out waste including bad bacteria. Every one and a half to two hours your intestines contract to keep the waste in your stomach moving throughout the rest of your digestive system. When you eat, this process comes to a stop. That means snacking constantly can lead to overgrowth of bacteria and slow down digestion. You do not have to go to the extent of fasting, but you should give your body breaks between meals to prevent bloating and constipation.

Drink water

This tip is on pretty much every wellness blog and for a good reason. Your gut needs to be hydrated to keep waste and bad bacteria out of your system. You should drink about half your body weight in ounces of water a day. That means if you weigh 130 lbs, you should drink about 65 oz of water each day. Dehydration can cause the bad bacteria to outnumber the good bacteria and lead to inflammation.

Avoid stress

Easier said than done, right? While a stress-free life is what we all strive for, it can feel impossible to accomplish. Try to cope with your stress in productive ways like through meditation, yoga, therapy, and time outdoors. Letting stress take over cause your brain to slow down digestion, causing bad bacteria to thrive in your gut.

Electroencephalography (EEG) is the activity of measuring electrical patterns, also known as
brainwaves, at the surface of the scalp. These electrical patterns reflect activity in the outer
layer of the cerebrum, which is responsible for integrating sensory and neural functions. When
referring to Quantitative EEG (qEEG), a doctor is analyzing digitized EEG results so that they
can interpret them and better understand a patients brain function. Thanks to the mass
statistical analysis of EEG results we now have a normative database and doctors can track
brain function changes for a variety of purposes.
How is EEG revolutionary?
EEG is different from other brain scanning options because it measures electrical activity in
comparison to cross-sectional imaging (MRI, PET, CT scan) or blood flow (fMRI). The ability to
see brainwaves is what is revolutionary about EEG scans. Brainwaves are the root of us; they
are our thoughts, body commands, behaviours, and emotions, the result of communication
between the neurons in our brains. Essentially EEG provides doctors with quantitative data on
how a patients brain is functioning.
Brainwave Overview
There are many different kinds of brainwaves, with the main four being Beta, Alpha, Theta, and
Delta. Beta brainwaves are fast brainwaves, and when they are present they show an engaged,
alert, and focused mind – they are 12 Hz up to 38 Hz. Alpha brainwaves are indicative of a mind
that is at relaxed awareness; meditation brings them out – they are between 8 Hz and 12 Hz.
Theta brainwaves appear when a person is drowsy or daydreaming and are the first stage of
sleep (Theta brainwaves are present in children up to 13 years old when alert but should not be
present in alert adults) – they are between 4 Hz to 8 Hz. Delta brainwaves appear when
someone is deeply sleeping or show background thoughts (they have been shown to trigger
healing and growth and are the dominant brainwave in infants) – they are 0.5 Hz to 4 Hz. All
brainwaves types are necessary. There are two other brainwaves worth mentioning, and those
are Infra-low, which are below 0.5 Hz and are difficult to detect, and Gamma waves, which are
38 Hz and up.
How can this help detect concussions?
Detecting concussions use to be a challenging practice. Traditionally an MRI or CT scan can be
done to try and detect bleeding or bruising to the brain, but in many concussions this is not
present. Doctors also could test balance and vision problems, and go through symptoms with
patients. Due to patients not realizing they have a concussion, and doctors not spotting all
concussions, concussions have been traditionally underdiagnosed which can lead to difficulties
for patients.
Thanks to statistical data, qEEG can be applied to patients who may be suffering from a
concussion and abnormalities can be found in their EEG results, and appropriate treatment and
therapies can be provided. Continuous EEG scans can also be taken after the original diagnosis
to track healing.
