Three Farmers Camelina Oil: A Delicious and Convenient way to Healthier Cooking

Camelina Oil – have you ever heard of it before? Most likely not as this ancient oilseed fell off the grid many years ago when food industrialists decided that it contained far too many polyunsaturated fats making it difficult and expensive to hydrogenate and make margarine out of. Now here we are, some hundred years later, and those polyunsatured fats (specifically Omega-3) are exactly what we are looking for in our everyday diets. Lucky for us, three innovative farmers from Saskatchewan (who very appropriately have dubbed their brand Three Farmers) took it upon themselves to reintroduce this fabulous tasting oil to Canadian consumers.

So what exactly is Camelina Oil? Camelina is the name of the seed that this oil is derived from. It is a non-GMO seed that originated in parts of Northern Europe and Central Asia where historically, it was used as a cooking oil. Now grown in Saskatchewan, this product is 100% Canadian made. It is an expeller pressed (cold-pressed) oil. There are absolutely no chemicals or stripping agents used in production (as will often occur with alternative oils that have been refined). Since this oil remains in its most natural form through extraction, it retains all of its delicious flavour. Some have described its taste as having a fresh vegetable-like quality – think asparagus or fresh peas.

However, the most valuable characteristics of this ancient oil are its nutritional components. It is a powerful source of Omega-3 and a natural provider of Vitamin E. In just one tablespoon (15 ml) of Camelina Oil, a person receives 4 grams of ALA (Omega-3). This is greater than any other culinary oil on the market today. The high Vitamin E content has an antioxidant effect in the oil and creates stability, allowing this oil to withstand heat up to a temperature of 475°F. So not only is this oil beautiful for salads, dips, dressings and marinades; you can also sauté, roast, stir-fry and sear. All the while, consuming those oh-so-hard-to-come-by Omega-3s!

In addition to all these wonderful product features, each bottle of Three Farmers Camelina Oil is 100% traceable back to the farmer and field in which it was grown. Just visit www.threefarmers.ca, enter the code on the back of your bottle, and meet the farmer that grew your bottle!
