Although I often recommend that my patients try natural approaches to treating infections, there are many cases in which it’s necessary to take prescription antibiotics for bacterial infections.

In addition to killing off the offending bacteria, however, many antibiotics—especially the broad-spectrum varieties—can kill off your good intestinal bacteria which create an acid pH that prevents yeast overgrowth. Therefore, it’s important to take acidophilus to replenish these beneficial bacteria in order to help prevent yeast from proliferating. I recommend taking two capsules daily; one in the morning and one before bed, on an empty stomach. This also applies to when you are taking natural antibiotic supplements such as oregano oil, olive leaf, etc.
