The staff at Northshore Naturopathic Clinic are excitedly welcoming the shift in seasons as we step out of winter and into the warmer, sunnier days of SPRING. With the sun comes not only blossoming flowers and lush foliage but also fresh edible greens, spring onions, yummy garlic scapes, and much more! Dr. Matsen’s Eating Alive program promotes eating seasonally, so we’re excited about the local fresh produce coming available in the days ahead.

One of the primary reasons we promote a seasonal diet is because when you eat foods grown locally and native to your surrounding environment, your body naturally acquires the proper ratio of potassium and sodium. This ratio is important for signaling to the body when it needs to release stored vitamin D – vital for calcium absorption! So seasonal eating means your bones, muscles and tissues are all getting the calcium they need to be healthy and strong.

As Vancouverites, we are lucky to have the winter Farmer’s Market at Nat Bailey Stadium. However, now that Spring has sprung, we have 9 locations popping up all around the city!

Farmer’s Markets are truly one of my favorite things. In addition to the above, here are a few other reasons why you should frequent them often:

1. Quality – Locally grown food not only looks better but it tastes better because it’s fresher and more nutrient dense than the grocery store comparison.

2. Organic/Pesticide-free Options – Organic certification is expensive. Although many vendors do offer certified organic produce and meats (which is awesome!), many practice chemical-free farming and sustainable agriculture but are not entitled to the “organic” label without paying an expensive fee. Talk to the farmers and ask them how they grow their food. They love to talk about their trade – you’re bound to learn a thing or two and likely make a new friend!

3. Connectedness – When you know where your food comes from, where it was grown and who grew it – you simply have a higher appreciation for it.

4. Support the Local Economy – Buying directly from a farmer cuts out the middle person – the farmer gets a bigger cut and your money stays supporting the local economy over big business and box stores.

5. Atmosphere – It’s just a happy place to be! People are friendly, smiles are shared, and sometimes they even have live music and face painting for kids.

6. Food vendors – Food trucks often park on site, offering their delicious specialties.
